The Groodle or Goldendoodle is a hybrid dog breed resulting from mixing the Poodle with the Golden Retriever. Like most "designer breeds" this Doodle is not truly a breed of its own, but is a crossbreed; one that is gaining in popularity!
The Groodle was first developed in the 1990s and make great family pets, as well as versatile working dogs - guide dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs and sniffer dogs. They also do well in agility.
They can be very easy to train and make a good match for first time or timid owners. Groodles are not known to have aggressive traits, but do require proper socialisation and daily company as they can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long.
Groodles make excellent family dogs and provide gentle, affectionate companionship throughout their lifetimes.
The Groodle has become a popular family dog for many very good reasons. This dog has a friendly, intelligent and accepting nature that is endearing to everyone they meet. The Groodle is affectionate, patient and gentle, making them a wonderful family companion. They particularly enjoy human company and are very loyal. They have a playful side and can be mischievious if the mood strikes.
Like every dog, the Groodle needs early socialisation and exposure to lots of different environments, people, sights, sounds and experiences. This is the best way to ensure that your puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog.
Owing to their very social natures, they thrive on regular contact with their family and should be treated as a member of the family and household. Groodles do not do well living in a kennel or being left outside and can suffer from separation anxiety, which can lead to destructive behaviours. To avoid this, keep your Groodle with your family as much as possible and provide lots of toys and treats when you are away. It is also helpful to leave a TV or radio on so they feel less lonely.
If you are travelling or going on holidays for an extended period of time, we recommend getting a dog/house sitter or friend/family member to mind them while you are away. They will not do well in a kennel.
Groodles will suit both a city and country lifestyle as long as their exercise and social needs are met. Ideally they will need a well fenced yard or a daily 30min walk/run. They love to swim and play fetch, and are fabulous with children.
These dogs are not guard dogs and should not be used as a watchdog. Whilst they will bark at strangers approaching their home, they are not known to have any aggressive traits.
Highly intelligent, easy to train and a strong desire to please, makes them a wonderfully faithful family companion. If you are looking for a furry forever friend with an affectionate nature, gentle temperament and a fun loving personality, then the Groodle/Goldendoodle is for you!
Groodles are considered to be low to non shedding dogs and may be good match for people with allergies. They do require weekly to biweekly brushing to avoid knots, tangles and matting.
We also recommend a full body hair clip at least three times a year. Your Groodle will be very grateful for a fortnightly bath with conditioner to help reduce any tangles, particularly if you do like to keep their coat long.
With their large, floppy ears, Groodles can be prone to ear infections. In order to keep their ears clean, we recommend using an ear solution once or twice a week and maintaining the amount of hair inside the ear as well. It is important NEVER to use "cotton buds" as these can damage the ear drum.
Groodles range from small to large, depending on the variety of Poodle the Golden Retriever is bred with. (I.e. toy, miniature or standard)
Mini Groodles will vary between 30cm - 45cm at the shoulder. Their head will be around knee height or lower depending on the parent Poodle size. These dogs will weigh between 10kg - 18kg when fully mature.
Standard Groodles will vary in height and range between 38cm - 65cm at the shoulder, depending on the parent Poodle size. These dogs will weigh between 15kg - 35kg when fully mature.
Groodle coat types can vary from Hair, Fleece and Wool:
Hair, Smooth or Slick Coat
- Shedding with scruffy or wavy texture similar to that of a Golden Retriever.
- Not allergy friendly.
Fleece Coat
- Low shedding with a soft wavy or loose spiral texture.
